Speaker Design - First Order Series Crossover

Below are measurements of an ArtistCloner speaker design.

Two way design (TM) with Scanspeak drivers
Quasi Series crossover

Impedance of 2 way system

Smooth impedance curves makes for an easy load and lets the amplifier shine its best. Excellent results from 90Hz to 20KHz; 6ohms to 12 ohms impedance. Even a tube amp can drive these with ease.

Phase Response

Low phase angle; less than +-22 degrees from approximately 150Hz to 20KHz;  easy load angles keeps amplifiers from misbehaving and/or effect their frequency response.

Waterfall plot
In this graph we are looking at energy being stored and released again. An excellent graph should look like a cliff. The graph implies low energy storage or resonances; this speaker should sound balanced through the frequency band of 300hz to 15KHz.

Frequency response in room - no normalizing

In room response. The frequency below 300Hz is really dependent on the room speakers are placed in and where in that same room. Room Dimensions for this frequency response are approximately 14X22x9(feet) with a rising ceiling and the measurement at approximately 1 meter. The reading below extends well into the 30Hz region with a 7 inch driver. The goal is not ruler flat response but how the speaker sounds in real world situations.  In actual listening tests, guests always ask if these are the only speakers playing in the room and/or where is the sub-woofer hidden. Bass is solid down to 32Hz on listening tests.

So how does it sound?
Fast, coherent, detailed, smooth, balanced, authoritative. The size of this speaker belies the soundscape size and dynamics.

Series crossover - Pros and Cons

Pros
  • Minimal electrical phase shift
  • Phase tracking at the crossover region
  • Minimal components
  • Better tweeter protection at high power
  • Shorting of frequencies instead of blocking
  • More Open sounding
  • Best driver integration
  • Wide dispersion
  • More coherent sound wave launch from the cabinet
  • More natural dynamics delivery at crossover region
  • Great transient response
Cons
  • Difficulty in implementation
  • Higher cost of parts
  • Long tweaking hours
  • No commercial software designer available
  • High quality drivers required
